Johan Hanekom is the Sandvik product specialist for Porter Group New Zealand. He shares some insight into his expertise and the Sandvik Mobile Plant range and its place within the New Zealand quarrying and mining industry.

What is your career background?

I have been working in a sales and marketing role in the heavy equipment market for the past 14 years. Early in my career, I worked as a business development manager for a bank doing commercial finance on capital equipment before joining Bell Equipment South Africa in 2008.

EvoQuip’s size reduction crusher ‘Cobra 290R’ has been successfully processing alluvial gravel for a South Wairarapa quarry in Featherston owned and operated by PJ Warren Earthmoving.

Jaw crusher

Sandvik Jaw Crushers (QJ241, QJ341, UJ440i) are excellent for use in primary applications. With various jaw plate configurations available they are ideal for use in crushing hard rock products such as granite and basalt and other material with comprehensive strength below 320MPa for QJ models, and up to 450MPa for UJ models.

There are many different types of sand screws in the market with varying styles of lower end bearings. The two common styles are the flange bearing and the outboard bearings. Flange style bearings are installed directly against the tub which can be a costly design error. When the water seal wears, the bearing becomes vulnerable to water and sand, generally resulting in bearing failure and unplanned downtime. The outboard bearing is mounted external to the tub and uses a common plummer block or pillow block bearing; if there is a seal failure the bearing is not affected. Another key benefit is ease of maintenance.

Equip2 recently held a two-day event simply called “Demo Day”. The legendary Equip2 Demo Day event is in its fourth iteration as NZ’s biggest quarrying equipment event, boasting everything a professional would want to see at an equipment-focused event, plenty of machinery, practical demonstrations and plenty of networking opportunities.
