Mike Blair from KB Contracting & Quarries has been in business long enough to know a good machine when he finds one. With the Christchurch company enjoying a 45-year history in the earthworks and aggregates businesses, Mike and his father – company founder, Kevin and brother David – before him have learnt that the key to successfully diversifying is trusting in good gear and good guys.

KB operates two quarries to the west of the city; one at Miners Road, where they have been for the past 25 years, and a new 250 acre operation at McLeans Island, which came on-stream at the end of 2014. “We’ve also been at the Burwood Landfill for about 35 years,” says Mike. “That’s been a good consistent contract to have, although during the earthquakes it all went pretty crazy; all the liquefaction slurry went in there, so we’d have 20 or 30 truck and trailers dumping slurry at a time, with another 30 or 40 trucks out on the haul roads waiting to come in.”

MIMICO, along with sister-company Crane Sales New Zealand, have expanded their capacity after the purchase of a new site in Matamata.

The site, on the corner of Waihou Street and Rockfield Place on the outskirts of the rural Waikato town, was the previous home of Rocktec. It is almost next door to MIMICO’s headquarters, which is also based on Waihou Street.

Crane Sales New Zealand and MIMICO Engineering have moved into the facility, while MIMICO’s crushing and screening team will also be based there. Along with offices and large workshop, the facility also contains some serious yard space.
